Do you remember when Pluto was the 9th planet from the Sun? This was true of Pluto until 2006, when scientists demoted it to dwarf planet status. Thus, the name "Sons of Pluto" points to the fact that we are the product of a time when Pluto was still a planet. On a deeper level, the name is a recognition of impermanence and the fond reminiscing of the simpler days past, as well as something worthy of our admiration. Formed as an untitled band in September 2010 to perform at a series of events at the University of Ottawa, the group developed their raw passion while playing covers and creating medleys for their audiences. With some gig experience under their belt, the team solidified their sound and approach with a name: Sons of Pluto. The band continued to perform, having an ever evolving lineup of wonderful friends since then. Like any band, Sons of Pluto is the amalgamation of their influences. However, these influences often prove to be more eclectic than most. With a distinct combination of classical, rock, indie, musical theatre, punk, jazz, gospel, R&B, and chart toppers dating back to the 50s, the band tries to take the best of all of those genres and construct something as catchy as it is meaningful. Sons of Pluto strives to combine their eclectic, varied musical backgrounds to offer a high-energy, entertaining listening experience. Their first EP, “The Age I’m In”, serves as their introduction to the world, which delivers a representation of the moments they endure while coming to terms with the pressures of adulthood and the responsibilities derived therein. The album showcases feelings of uncertainty about aspirations and achievements, the perils of engaging in a toxic relationship, the stoic ache of missing a loved one who has moved away, and the perpetual struggle to keep your vices and deepest urges at bay. “The Age I’m In” offers a mix of themes that young people of yesterday, today, and tomorrow can relate to. Merging various genres of music in true SOP fashion, it works to combine elements of rock, classical, indie and blues to provide an entertaining piece to be enjoyed over and over again. Sons of Pluto would like to thank their past members who were an integral part of their musical and personal development. They would also like to thank their friends and families who have provided years of overwhelming support and encouragement. This is for you!
